During a period of significant expansion, the 104-member law firm faced a critical decision: pursue rapid growth with potential risks and substantial costs, or adopt a more measured, sustainable growth strategy that might impact revenues and profitability.
This dilemma is a common challenge for growing law firms. As they grow, so do their associated costs, unless they improve margins.

In 2021, at a time when Legau’s AI Assistant did not exist yet, CCA adopted Legau’s core product within the whole firm and saw improvements in productivity.
This initial success showed that they could achieve both rapid and sustainable growth — and that they did not have to compromise one for the other.
Encouraged by this initial success, in April 2023, CCA’s Corporate Law Department was the first in Portugal to adopt Legau’s AI Assistant, which is a powerful supplement to Legau’s core product.

The majority of associates now find themselves integrating AI into their daily practice as supplemental aids for tasks ranging from routine translations to information retrieval and brainstorming.
These tools, in tandem with the associates’ critical and analytical prowess, are proving to be excellent in laying the groundwork for legal work.
The support from the AI Assistant instills a heightened sense of confidence, with the knowledge that they have an AI ally ready to assist at any moment, leading to more autonomous work, improved quality, and fewer interruptions for senior staff.

Corporate Law Department’s Managing Associate, Filipa Correia Henriques, adds that “the AI’s suggestions and proposed clauses’ improvements ensure the creation of a more comprehensive work and enables a more detail-oriented review of legal documents”.
Augmentation of Associates
Legau’s AI assistant has expedited several core processes for the attorneys, such as legal research and drafting and reviewing legal documents, saving them valuable time and allowing them to shift their attention towards more strategic work.
Marta Celorico Palma, an Associate of the Corporate Law Department, mentioned that “working with the AI Assistant makes drafting and reviewing documents faster and more efficient, which allows me to focus on other tasks”.
For instance, with the AI Assistant, attorneys can not only seek assistance in drafting contracts but also in organizing memorandums and presentations, as well as identifying negotiable terms (and negotiation arguments) or open items.
Additionally, attorneys can also quickly handle court decisions in just minutes instead of spending hours sifting through them to see if they are relevant to their case and then reading the important ones.
Increased Attorney Productivity and Efficiency
For law firms, security and confidentiality of information is a critical concern when using an AI assistant. This is for good reason: many AI assistants are using their clients’ information to train their AI models, which is far from ideal for law firms as it compromises one of their core ethical and legal obligations.
At Legau, we take the security and confidentiality of our clients’ information very seriously. We have implemented robust infrastructure and protocols to ensure that our clients’ information remains safe and private, and we do not use our clients’ information to train our AI Assistant.
